Investigate Special Investigations Unit Boss for intimidating a radio journalist

Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda) is calling on the Police to investigate the SIU, Boss Chelimo Beata for orchestrating intimidation and harassment of a radio journalist, James Kasirivu who works with Endigito radio, in Mbarara district, Western Uganda.SIU is a semi-autonomous body under the Uganda Police Force which investigates serious cases, especially those which the State has interest in. It is notorious for cracking down on hardcore criminals and dealing with opposition politicians. SIU was first named the Violent Crackdown Unit (VCCU) and later Rapid Response Unit (RRU)..Download

Halt The SIM Card Registration Process

The government should immediately halt the ongoing SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card registration due to noncompliance by the telephone service providers to the Regulations on Interception of Communications Act and Regulations of Interception of Communications Instrument. Besides, the law applied is not in conformity with the Constitution, fall short of Human Rights standards and the general principles of data protection.Download

The Sim-Card Registration Case

This case is coming up on Monday, the 20th May 2012 at 9:00 a.m.for “a scheduling/status conference” and “consideration of submissions in respect of the petitioners’ prayer for a temporary injunction”.
Hon. Mr. Justice Eldad Mwangutsya is the trial judge who had earlier been allocated to handle the case, but we have learnt that he has been promoted to the Court of Appeal. We therefore anticipate that this status conference will be his last involvement in the case as he is expected to make a formal handover of all court matters to another judge in the Civil Division..Download
